Cleaning products to avoid wasting money on that do ‘more harm than good’

Cleaning products aren't exactly the most exciting thing to spend hard-earned cash on, and with the cost of living climbing steadily higher, households may be looking for ways to cut back on their cleaning spend.

Nigel Bearman, CEO and founder of Daily Poppins, has shared four common cleaning products to stop buying from the shops.

He said: “There are a lot of cleaning products you don't need to buy, and they often do more harm than good. You can also do it yourself for a much lower cost.

“These products are better left on the shelves, and smart substitutes can be used in their place.”

Cleaning stainless steel with stainless steel cleaners is “not necessary” for most households. Instead, olive oil and dish soap “work just as well”, claimed Nigel.

He explained that the “best way to clean appliances” is with dish soap, as it is perfect for removing grease, oils, food, and fingerprints.

Simply moisten a microfibre cloth with a modest amount of water after putting a little dish soap on it. Using olive oil, wipe along the grain of the appliance, then add more as necessary depending on the surface area.

It is not necessary to use a different surface spray for every room since they all tend to perform the same function.

The expert revealed: “Testing of these sprays revealed virtually no difference between multipurpose cleaners and kitchen sprays, which means they're all going to do roughly the same job, no matter where you are.”

Choosing the right cleaning product is important, but once households have found one they like, it can be used everywhere.

Oven cleaners differ only in the toxic hazardous smell they leave behind. Although the oven cleaning setting is the best and safest way to remove any extra grease and grime, not all ovens have it.

For those who have the self-cleaning feature, follow it up with this easy recipe that combines dish soap, vinegar, and baking soda.

Put liberal amounts of soapy paste on the oven doors and walls with a sponge. After 30 minutes, wipe away all grease and grime with the abrasive side of the sponge. After that, rinse the oven inside with water.

Dishwasher cleaning solutions are not essential as the family dishwasher can be kept clean with just white vinegar in a hot cleaning cycle.

Though commercial cleaners work well, they are “often overkill”, and “should only be used if decades of grime need to be removed”.

However, it is worth noting that in some cases, vinegar may erode sensitive internal mechanisms over time, so it is best to check the manual before using vinegar.
